Spring In Your Step

I think it is safe to say that everyone is desperate for Spring. I am currently enjoying my own little “Spring Break” in Florida, and I am quite content with the high 70s and sunshine. Come July in Texas you may hear me wishing for fur blankets and boots, but for now I will savor every minute that the outdoors become closer to white jean worthy.

Here are a few splendid images that will have you marching forth to spring time entertaining. They will surely put a spring in your step!

An Artist’s Way With Chinoiserie

Occasionally on Instagram, you discover people who possess rare talents of exceptional design and good taste. Dana Mahnke is no exception. At first, I was drawn to her blue and white chinoiserie ornaments. Sadly, by the time I discovered her, it was too late to place my Christmas order. I then fell in love with her pictures of pet portraits, her everyday photos of her timelessly designed Virginia home, and more recently, her photos of chinoiserie, monogrammed, and tastefully designed hand painted eggs.

From all of her photos, it is clear that Dana is a true artist of her craft. This native Virginian was raised to appreciate the beauty of her surroundings, always admiring Chinoiserie in the traditional colonial decor from a young age.  Even with raising two children, Dana would do pen to paper illustrations as a time passing passion, which quickly turned into more formal portraits that were hung in homes throughout the country.

Despite a battle with cancer, she continued to keep her strong faith, humor, design, art, and love of all things blue and white her passionate priorities. She owned a shop in Williamsburg for a period, and now spends time working on watercolors of whimsical prints, as well as ornaments and eggs that range from pink and white to blue and white in color. Her chinoiserie, topiaries, monograms, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and other patterns are all hand painted with great diligence of design. Dana can also make any custom creations of your liking…a potted boxwood perhaps?

Dana also plans to combine her love of chinoiserie and sweet pups with blue and white chinoiserie dog bowls and canisters launching soon! I personally couldn’t be more excited for that!

Her work speaks for itself, and her Etsy shop, Indigo Home, will become your new favorite bookmarked web page. It is apparent from the photos that Dana surrounds herself with visual delights and creates beauty in blue and white.

Flawlessly executed, her blue and white patterned china makes the perfect backdrop for her hand painted eggs. This style egg arrives with a stand (not all do!). Makes for a excellent display on a vignette or a luncheon tablescape.

Sunshine Statement

The Dallas area got 5″ to 7″ of snow yesterday, which undoubtedly shuts down our city. While the snow was beautiful and delightful, I must say it was far more exciting to see the sun! Sun is definitely on my radar, since I will thankfully be flying to the sunshine state today.

Stay tuned for some fun posts next week! Until then, I’ll let you dream of the beach. That just so happens to be my hometown….

As always, check my instagram for photos of my visit.

Happy Weekend!

See Food

How does your fridge look right now? Sadly, mine looks pretty pathetic: bottled water, array of sauces and no food to put them on! Not a smart situation considering the ice, sleet and snow that decided to visit Dallas last night (spring, we are ready for you!). My lack of fridge aesthetic has me wondering if I could ever pull off a glass refrigerator. I often wonder if I am up to the effort. I also know I would shamelessly buy an abundance of produce and untasty health food strictly for viewing purposes. I also know that the produce would no doubt go untouched and would eventually find it’s way in the trash.  But I do eat healthy, really!

The problem is that I love glass door refrigerators. I think they are smart, sleek, and intriguing. They can add a bit of an industrial feel into a kitchen. They can also be unexpectedly pretty. A light reflection of glass that can really make a kitchen feel more inviting. These images below are full of glass door refrigerators that make grocery shopping look good, even if your eating habits are not!

Sun Up

Where…is….the…sun?! I really can’t tell you the last time we saw it here in Dallas. It has been a dreary, gloomy, rainy, icy, snowy mess here over the past few weeks. Luckily, I have Florida to look forward to next week. Until then, I will just have to settle for pictures of bright blue skies and homes sunning in tropical sunny places. One home that appears to be the perfect paradise is this Lyford Cay retreat by Andrew Raquet (who sadly passed away last year).

Raquet took this home, formerly owned by Laura Ashley, and created a well appointed interior that let the Georgian style architecture bask in it’s glow. The home could easily be on the mainland USA, but there are hints of tropical colors, textures, and design that make it relevant to the island life. The home has a formal register, yet an enviable ease. It couldn’t look more ideal on a “wintry mix” day like today!

Architectural Delight: McAlpine Tankersley

I recently featured a home designed by Lisa Hilderbrand that was featured in Traditional Home. It was stunning in it’s design and perfectly scaled in it’s landscapes. I also really admired  the restorative work done by architects McAlpine Tankersley. Sure, I have heard their names before, but I didn’t really grasp how much of their work I have loved and recognized until recently.

McAlpine Tankersley doesn’t just create a house, they create the ideal home. Every nook is well thought out, wonderfully arranged, and perfectly placed. They capture the awe factor without neglecting the importance of warmth, timeless style, intriguing architectural elements that make you look twice when driving by. Each home is so distinct that at first you don’t realize it is the same architectural firm (as is often the case with many architects). That is a true testament to their creative abilities, and their flexibility when appealing to their world-wide clientele.

This Alabama based firm has me longing for one of their sweet homes. Until then, enjoy these images, most of which are from their website www.mcalpinetankersley.com.

A Dallas staple by McAlpine Tankersley via Veranda

For my Dallasites, this is probably a home you have passed by a million times. It sits on a familiar corner of Highland Park. This is the side view of the house, which many often confuse as the front. I must say, as a freshman in college, I didn’t understand it, but I have learned to truly love and appreciate it’s architectural significance. I remember reading in the 2009 Veranda when it was featured, that the owners were avid art collectors. At night when the home is lighted, you can clearly see it display their works beautifully.

Do I even need to comment? Topiaries, symmetry, and classic elegance.

Notice the beams on the ceiling and the stair rails above it. That is such a significant focal point of the room, almost more so than the view!

Is this not a driveway of dreams? The large European inspired doors, the walkway across, and the romantically designed cabana area on top. See more below.

A little creole inspiration in this home entry. I love the depth of the green in the shutters and door paint. I love that their homes are never cookie cutter or overly embellished.

Toile Time

Toile de Jouy, otherwise known simply as toile (rhymes with y’all), is a pattern that has not been very visible the last couple of years. There was a period in time it had quite the comeback about 7/8 years ago. It was referred to as the wallpaper of choice by many a chick lit novel and also made it’s way onto my twin dorm bed in hues of pinks and greens during my freshman year of college.

I feel toile is a fabric that you either understand and appreciate, or you shy away from it claiming it is “too busy” or “too old lady.” Side note- I hate the phrase “old lady.” It really just means it is something that is classic and long lasting. Things may often look “staid” or “stuffy,” but don’t insult a generation of housewives who didn’t shy away from bold pattern. I digress. My point is that toile is not for everyone (just like chintz, damask, and paisley). However, with so many patterns and so many colors, toile can really be applicable in any home. From the images below, it is clear to me it will never go out of style.

Unlike Paisley, which I avoid at all costs. ha! Happy Monday boxwood friends!
