An Appealing Apartment

There are some designer names that stand out, and others that are less familiar. Garrow Kedigan may not be a name that is instantly recognizable, but his work will make a name for itself. Kedigan’s cunning ability to incorporate texture (this week’s Potted Boxwood Buzzword) and traditional lines is unparalleled.

If my great-grandmother was still alive, I could see her using Kedigan to give her classic antiques a fresh setting. While you may think a great-grandmother taste is “old lady,” you clearly never met a great-grandmother like mine, nor have you seen the talent that Kedigan has to make every room extraordinarily chic. Just take a look into Kedigan’s stylish and remarkable NYC apartment. Also, follow him on instagram to see an expansive view of his interiors.

Photos of Garrow Kedigan’s apartment are by Christopher Sturman in House Beautiful.

A Velvet Touch

Whenever I walk into a room and it feels incomplete, chances are it is one of two things. A- a lack of furniture/art, or B- a lack of texture. More often than not, it is the latter. Texture is such a crucial element in the design of every room. It is also easy to forget about. Many people think in terms of pattern and color, not textures like velvet and twill. In my opinion, velvet is the best texture in existence.

Velvet immediately adds a certain richness and warmth to a room. It is soft and inviting, yet extremely sophisticated and classic. My love affair with velvet began when I first came across Tory Burch’s living room in Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People. I right away began lusting for a green velvet sofa.  It is still on my wish list for my post-puppy abode. In the mean time, I have green velvet pillows to fill my void.

A Boxwood Nest

While preparing Wednesday’s post I immediately fell in love with the hallway entrance of the Palm Beach home of Harry and Laura Slatkin. If their names don’t initially sound familiar, let me say that they are responsible for one of the most remarkable home fragrance lines ever created, NEST. I am in fact getting ready to purchase my first NEST Pumpkin Chai candle of the season, a must for every autumn day (the cold front better hurry-up!).

The Slatkin’s are world-renown for their impeccable taste, so it is no wonder that their Palm Beach getaway would reflect the same aesthetics. Of course, my favorite thing about the home is the grounds, which are abundant in boxwood hedges. I truly wish there were more exterior pictures to see! After all, who doesn’t love a home covered in boxwood beauty?!

Keeping it short and sweet today! Have a great weekend!

On The Rox

When I was in Aspen in late July, I met a woman named Julie Lieberman. We instantly began discussing design, and I soon discovered that she and her business partner, Caryn Jacobs, were just about to launch a line of luxury home accessories. ROX by CJ Designs is their brand which carries top-of-the-line acrylic boxes, risers, and napkin rings that are covered exquisitely in stones such as agate, quartz, amethyst, and citrine.

Caryn and Julie both possess a tasteful eye which is apparent in their application and aesthetics of their brand. Clearly, I am not the only one to think that. Luxury retail stores have quickly caught on to their high-end items that make ideal gifts for any occasion. I am happy to report that my Christmas shopping is complete, and my vignettes are now perfectly placed. If you are in the Dallas area, be sure to visit their trunk show tomorrow, Friday, September 12th, from 10am-2pm at 5807 Park Lane, Dallas, TX.

Hall Pass

When I was in search of the perfect unit in my high-rise, I had one requirement. I did not want to open the door and walk straight into a kitchen. I am a firm believer in the power of an entrance and the importance of a hallway. In fact, it can easily be said that my hallway is a waste of space. However, it adds a flair of drama and is by far the best hallway to play fetch (so says Emmie the Pug). Let’s just say it is her own personal doggie runway.

Hallways, like stairways, provide a gracious transition from one place to the next. I love wide hallways, where side tables, benches, and chairs can be placed. They allow for creative and elegant vignettes, as well as more area to use pattern and texture. Hallways are especially a great place to use furniture that may not be so comfortable, but is itself a piece of art. A crucial element for hallways is lighting. Without the right lighting, a hallway can look dingy, dark, and uninviting. Pay special attention to the light fixtures below, you will see plenty that will make you want to deck the halls!

Sorry for my absence yesterday, my sinuses got the better of me!

The Great Room Of China

Some people have different versions of “ultimate” luxury, especially when it comes to designing a home. I would imagine a man would think an incredibly large five-car garage would be appealing. Kids may think that having a game room and pool slides would be the ideal wow-factor for a home. Most women dream of a beautifully large closet and perfectly appointed bathroom. Then there are those few who think one special room would be the best display of true luxury- a china room.

If you haven’t guessed, I would fall in the latter category. Don’t misunderstand, I think a roomy closet and fresh carrara marble bathroom is fabulous, but to me a china room would be the ultimate cherry on top of the cake. There is something so wonderful about a room or china closet that can store all of your entertaining essentials. A kitchen is great for food, cooking, and everyday use, but a china room can separate the mundane from the magnificent.

My future Anna Weatherly and Majolica will thank me later. My future significant other…well, probably not so much.

Accessible Amenities

As you all know, I am not one to share too many details of my personal life on the blog, just my personal design style. However, today I want to end the week on a personal note. There is a dear family friend who is faced with creating a bathroom that is wheelchair accessible. It doesn’t sound timeless, trendy, or chic, but it is a reality. A reality that many people face. Just because you have a disability, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice good taste. While I would love to see some of my favorite designers create handicap accessible homes, those often don’t make the pages of interior publications.

I found a few favorites that were beautifully finished. I recognize that this may not interest most of you, and it certainly didn’t interest our family friend until this was the only option she was given. It is a harsh and sad reality, but I think all of us can look on the bright side of tragedy. No matter your ability, budget, or space- you can make it chic, beautiful, and inspiring.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend! See you back here Monday!

A Painted Sky

I don’t ever walk into a room and think, “Oh my, that ceiling is just to die for.” I am being honest. It is not on the forefront of my mind. Chances are I am more apt to notice the wallpaper, fabric choices, and prominent texture that exists in a space. The paint color of the ceiling tends to be an after thought, a red-headed step child of design decision making. While it may seem distant, it is part of the family and is very much a crucial element of a room’s overall atmosphere.

Today, I am focusing on painted ceilings that are set apart from the traditional off-white application. I want to examine painted ceilings that stand-out and make the room come alive in a way that tradition would not allow. A pop of color from above can often be the cherry on top of a perfect room.

The Gorgeous Designs Of Suellen Gregory

In yesterday’s post I came across some beautiful white rooms by Suellen Gregory. The rooms were full of chic personality and classic lines. I immediately knew I had to find out more. Suellen lives in Richmond, Virginia and possess an eye for stately antiques combined with dynamic design. At times her designs seem familiar, but she tends to find a ways to layer them with surprises of color and fabric.

Here are more timeless, colorful, and inviting rooms by Suellen Gregory. Happy Wednesday!

Break The Rule

No white after Labor Day. You have heard the rule. The real question is do you follow it? Growing up in Florida, this rule did not exist, was not enforced, and was irrelevant. People come to Florida to get a second season wear of their white jeans, dresses, and bathing suits. I was more than happy to have them as a year round staple in my Floridian wardrobe.

Enter my freshman year at SMU. I distinctly remember the Tuesday after Labor Day when I overheard a bunch of girls saying how they were putting away their summer clothes and taking out their fall ones. Needless to say, I was confused. After all, the temperature was in the 100’s and it was impossible to walk outside without perspiring. However, I unwillingly followed along.

Fast forward to last year, when I finally decided it was ridiculous to put away my summer whites when it still felt like summer. I saw so many other people stretching out their wear, so why should I suffer with the “blues.” That philosophy is the inspiration for this post. White can work year round in the home, last week’s post proves that. I will certainly go through all of the seasonal textures and traditions for the home on The Potted Boxwood, but today let’s give white one last hoorah.
