Living in Color

When the July-August issue of Veranda arrived, there was plenty of design inspiration to love! While the cover of Mark D. Sikes home was enough motivation to pick up the issue, what was inside was equally as delightful. Immediately when I saw that Kirsten Fitzgibbons and Kelli Ford had a property featured, I knew that it would be something spectacular.

Living in Dallas, I love to frequent their home store Madison in Highland Park Village. I have also admired Kelli’s University Park home for years. Every time the sister design duo comes together they create fresh, refined, and luxurious spaces that stand the test of time. Their use of patterns, textures, and color is unparalleled, especially in this vivacious Southampton home by architect Peter Pennoyer.

Photos are taken by Melanie Acevedo in Veranda magazine. To see more photos of this fabulous Southampton retreat pick up the August issue today!

Kelli and Kirsten Entry in Southampton via Veranda

The entry is instantly receptive and gracious. When you see color you know you are entering a happy home.

Living area with Blue and White in Kelli Ford's Southampton Home via Veranda

I love the use of purple, blue, and white throughout the house. It adds such a young and fresh element!

Kelli Ford Southampton Living Room 2 via Veranda

Kelli Ford Southampton living area via Veranda

The rooms have such a collected, yet uncluttered feel to them. The pink is a sophisticated shade that avoids looking juvenile. It would be hard to walk into this room and not feel instantly happy!

Kelli Ford Southampton Kitchen via Veranda

What an ideal Hampton’s kitchen. It is simple, clean, and full of fresh light.

Kelli Ford Southampton dining via Veranda

The dining room takes a more scaled down approach to really let the view be the focal point. I adore the soft blue walls. The other dining area featured in the magazine takes a different approach with a bolder use of blue and white.

Kelli Ford Southampton Home Hallway via Veranda

Fitzgibbons and Ford tried to avoid nautical references throughout the house, but left this mahogany hallway, similar to a luxury ocean liner, intact. What I love most about this image is the view into the bedrooms. Lovely fabrics and colors that are perfectly placed and Hamptons chic.

Purple and Blue Bedroom KK Southampton Home via Veranda

A perfect play of color with the purple Donghia linen walls as a backdrop to the lively blue and white fabric. That Bunny Williams lamp is everything!

Kelli Ford Bedroom Southampton bedroom via Veranda

Kirsten and Kelli always have the most unbelievably beautiful monogrammed linens. If you ever visit their store Madison in Highland Park Village they can exquisitely initial everything from a lacquered tray to a pad of paper.

Kelli Ford Southampton Bathroom via Veranda

Talk about blue and white! What a serene and heavenly bathroom. Notice how they tiled the ceiling giving it a jewel box feel!  That potted palm gives a splash of personality.

Kelli Ford Southampton Pool via Veranda

A picture perfect pool. Kirsten and Kelli master the art of colorful and inviting spaces. Now go run to get the July-August Veranda issue to see the rest of the house!

The Simple Delight of Blue & White

I feel I would be remiss if I did not post about blue and white. While all of my favorite design bloggers cover it enough for me, I need to say my praise to the classic and timeless color combination. I thought about doing a post on my favorite triple color palate of blue, green, and white, but I decided to pay my respects to the perfect pair.

Whether it is a porcelain piece or pretty fabric, blue and white will always incorporate elegance into a space. Here are beautiful blue and white designed rooms and resources that will surely inspire you to add the delightful duo in your home.

Early to Bed

I am a morning person. I like to get up early and workout, turn on the Today show (I tried GMA for a week, it just didn’t work out), and browse through my favorite blogs with coffee all before 8 a.m.! Apparently that is the old me. Currently I am a night owl, up until 3 a.m. researching items for the blog and reading often mindless articles. Believe it or not, you can’t be a morning person or a night owl if you don’t somehow manage to get decent sleep. Well you technically could, but I have seen how those people prematurely age and no amount of La Mer can save them! No thank you!

I am going to try to re-establish my early to rise routine again, which means I need to start going early to bed. Those who receive The Potted Boxwood fresh in your email each morning will likely still be in bed while reading this post. It is to you I apologize, for these images will make you want to do anything but get out of bed. Below you will find some beautiful bedrooms that create a sanctuary of sweet dreams and sleeping in.

P.S. Every bed has white sheets, yet none of these rooms look plain. Just a thought for all my non-must-use-white-linens-believers.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.

Cocktail Hour

It’s Friday which always calls for a celebration! Whether you clink your glass at the end of the week with your favorite person or a gathering of people, it is always a good excuse (if you even need one) for cocktail hour. While inviting people up to the kitchen counter and passing drinks around the table is an easy fix, it is not always functional. In my opinion, it is totally worth having a home bar to keep your top-shelf libations organized, accessible and presentable.

Having a legitimate home bar may seem far fetched for those short on space, but it is feasible. Bar carts are a timeless way to set up all of your favorite cocktail essentials for the happiest of hours. Also, a simple side table or bookshelf can make an inviting space for friends to help themselves to the drink of their choice. Setting up a bar cart may seem like work, but having an open area for friends to mix their own drinks can save you the hassle of deciding if your frenemy can handle one shot or two.

Along with images of classic cocktail hour carts and bars, I have included some expert advice on how to make your bar area the best it can be. At the end of the post you will find my wish list of bars to buy and accessories to make it look great! Cheers!

On The Gallery Wall

Artwork often lives up to it’s namesake for plenty of homeowners. It can be hard work to find the right art for a space. Very large pieces of nice art can be incredibly pricey, but not filling the wall appropriately can make a space look incomplete. “Gallery Wall” is often a buzzword used in decorating these days. The perfectly placed collection of prints, photos, and art can make a room look collected, polished, and visually appealing.

The best part about gallery walls is that they can be arranged in frames of different sizes and colors with one filled with a fine piece of art, while the other is a favorite photo. It is also important to realize that the symmetry of the wall does NOT have to be perfect. However, some gallery walls can look awkward and misplaced. Below, I have links to helpful advice for arranging your gallery walls that can save you the headache of several holes in the walls (I am talking from experience). Following, I’ve included beautiful arrangements of gallery walls to inspire.

In The Land Of Lilly

Palm Beach EstateS

While in Florida, I feel it is important to share some iconic Floridian design. I think there is no better place to start than Palm Beach, The Land of Lilly. Lilly Pulitzer’s name evokes preppy southern nights, a chic lobster dinner on a sandy beach, and pool parties in the midst of palm tress. Lilly is all about bright colors, bold prints, and classic style. While not for everyone, it is something to be appreciated and respected even far away from Worth Avenue and the beaches of Sea Island.

There is a great deal of admiration for the New York City socialite who started a juice stand in Palm Beach wearing her own colorful shift dresses, and then turned that into a clothing empire that is still thriving today. Lilly Pulitzer’s Palm Beach residence provides the perfect backdrop for pool parties and cocktail gatherings. After passing away in 2013, her family quickly sold the classic Palm Beach estate allowing a glimpse into the colorful Life of Lilly.

Since there are not very many photos of the rather run-down Pulitzer estate, I decided to also incorporate some other homes with quintessential Palm Beach flair. Old Florida design may seem “old,” but it is also a reminder of the classically laid-back way of life.

Small Kitchens, Big Design

I often get caught up admiring kitchens that are designed on a grand scale. These kitchens have big islands, beautifully blended refrigerator and freezer doors, as well as ample room for every utensil/pot/pan imaginable. However, if you live in a city apartment or in an older cottage home, chances are there simply is not enough space to install a kitchen fit for a McMansion. Small kitchens are practicable for those who aren’t as talented as Giada with a pan, and they can also pack a big design punch.

Personally, I love galley kitchens. Call me crazy, but I enjoy how they have a hallway feel, like a little nook for cooking and drinking wine under low lighting. When tracing the source of one of my favorite galley kitchens for this post, I realized it was by the same designer, Phillip Mitchell, who I love to follow on Instagram with the most tasteful photos (see directly below). Small kitchens can be beautiful, powerful, and full of good taste- literally! See for yourself…

A window in a small kitchen definitely helps brighten the space. Why focus on adding color when your kitchen appliances can do that for you?! Photo source: Pinterest

Amazing Gracie

There are many required necessities for my ideal home. Notice how I said “ideal” instead of “realistic.” While I enjoy high-rise city living, I have a vivid vision of my perfect house. White painted brick, black high-gloss front door, potted boxwoods galore, green velvet sofa, Calacatta marble in a white kitchen, and….Gracie wallpaper.

I wish I could pinpoint when I was first graced by Gracie, I am only sure I knew of it’s existence by name around the beginning of college. There is something so special about Gracie’s hand-painted chinoiserie, floral, and landscape designs and the way they dress up the most beautiful dining rooms, bedrooms, powder rooms, and entries. Gracie wallpaper is timelessly used in spaces both traditional and trendy. While nothing beats a room covered in Gracie from floor to ceiling, wallpaper panels are also a smart way to keep your favorite Gracie custom pattern from house to house, space to space. Either way, you can’t go wrong!

Here are some gorgeous rooms that are full of amazing Gracie.

Blue Gracie Dining Room by Thad Hayes via Paris Apartment

While Gracie is used in many different rooms of the house, I see it most commonly used in dining rooms. Who wouldn’t want to eat with gorgeous hand-painted wallpaper surrounding you?! It is also very versatile for seasonal meals. Let me know how your summer luncheon goes in your red dining room…. Designed by Thad Hayes via The Paris Apartment

Let’s take a moment to admire the floors, as well as the shades of green and white. Then, let’s applaud them for being smart enough to put that gorgeous Gracie on a screen. Screens are really effective and luxurious, especially for scaling down big walls or large spaces. My family has always loved them. Photo source: Luxe Source

Mark D Sikes Dining Room via Lonny

The original dining room in the fabulous home of Mark D. Sikes. To see the updated version, pick up the July-August issue of Veranda. Oh, and pick up at least two copies- it is THAT good of an issue! Between the blue and white porcelain and the blue and white Gracie, I couldn’t love this room more (I may even like it better than the redo..there, I said it!). Photo source: Lonny Magazine

Gracie Wallpaper bedroom by Mario Buatta via AD

I adore this Gracie shade of green. The color has a layered feel, almost like the paint you find in Italy. A bold choice for a bedroom, but the green and white contrast is so classically fresh. Designed by Mario Buatta, featured in Architectural Digest.

David Easton Gracie Stairway

This entry by David Easton reminds me of a more country-club like version Blair Waldorf’s NYC apartment (Gossip Girl anyone?). Here, Gracie wallpaper is used on a large scale. I love the terra cotta potted flowers on the entry table.

As I mentioned earlier, Gracie panels are so incredibly smart to use in the home, especially if you are highly mobile in you career or have a tendency to house hop. This beautiful seating area designed by Sherrill Canet is featured in New York Cottages and Gardens.

Gracie wallpaper via vtinteriors

I am pretty positive this room would highly encourage wearing loungewear all day and reading magazines in bed until noon. It is so tranquil and relaxing, it would be impossible to feel stressed at the end and beginning of each day. Note- they just used the Gracie on one wall. Sometimes, that is all you need for wallpaper!  Photo source: VT Interiors

Hand Painted Trellis Wallpaper by Gracie designed by Bunny Willams via AD

Okay, I’ll admit it…I have seen this dining room about a hundred times and just now discovered it wasn’t actually a trellis on the walls of this breakfast room (I am assuming this room is used for breakfast..it just feels like it should be). Regardless of my now inadequate design eye, this is in fact a custom Gracie wallpaper. Bravo, Gracie…you fooled me! Design by the always remarkable Bunny Williams featured in Architectural Digest.

Let Freedom Ring

I am heading to The Sunshine State to enjoy some rest and relaxation at my parent’s home, and work on making The Potted Boxwood the best it can be! As many people head off to the beaches, lakes, and mountains to celebrate the Fourth, I thought I would share some patriotic images that evoke casual American design. I also included links from my favorite tastemakers to share some great Fourth of July entertaining ideas.

The Potted Boxwood is going to take a mini vacation until Monday (of course I will be active on Instagram and Twitter). While we may not be able to healthily grow potted boxwoods in Florida, my mom plants the most gorgeous potted flowers. I can’t wait to share some chic Florida design with you all!  Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend and Happy Fourth of July to all of my American readers!

Child’s Play

The love of design can emerge at any age. For some, it is innate and for others it develops over time. As for the rest, they are the ones who keep the world of designers and decorators in business! Regardless, every child deserves to live in a space that inspires.

Children often get overlooked in their room design, often because their tastes change from batman to baseball in the course of a week.  However, I take the philosophy that a child’s room that is calming yet stimulating can awaken creativity and create a personal world of comfort for a growing mind. Children’s rooms allow for the opportunity to be whimsical and use patterns that you secretly love, but shy away from in the main interiors.

The children’s rooms I tend to gravitate towards are ones that can be transitioned from baby-hood to the teenage years. They are also a combination of classic and modern, making it acceptable for there to be some toys on the floor and books on the bed. Here are some wonderful rooms to grow…

Acryllic Chair HB

This wallpaper and shade could have been used in a nursery, but the updated furniture allows for a smooth transition into middle school and teenage years. That bed looks incredible, and the gold bookcase is stunning!  Photo source: House Beautiful

Pretty in Pink Girls Room HB

There is nothing like a good pink print in a girl’s bedroom. Although a word of caution: I know the most adorable girl who had a beautiful pink toile bedroom (curtains, bedding, pillows), and she completely changed her tune right on the cusp of middle school. Probably to be expected, but it was a sad day for sure! Photo source: House Beautiful
